Island
Long Island is certainly one of the most beautiful and contrasting islands of the Bahamas Out Islands. Its four thousand inhabitants gracefully combine old-fashioned hospitality and relaxed lifestyle with the peacefully growing influx of modern life. Long Island is perhaps the most scenic Outland and is divided by the Tropic of Cancer. Caves, cliffs hills, and talcum powder sand beaches make up the landscape. The Indian inhabitants called Long Island Yuma. Although Columbus christened it 'Fernandina' its 65 mile-long length (averaging one to two miles in width) replaced Christopher's maiden name for the island. The motivations that bring travelers to many of the other out islands are fulfilled in Long Island. One of the fishing capitals of the world are in the waters off Long Island. A variety of sport fish are caught year round. Bone fishing takes first place here. Many say the diving is most spectacular of all on Long Island. The island's main population hubs, the towns of Deadman's Cay and Clarence Town, are south of the center of the island. Deadman's Cay contains about a third of the islands' lively population. The main airport is Stella Maris Airport with an additional the airport at Deadman's Cay leading to Clarence Town, a friendly village comprising around two hundred residents.
