The Out Islands
The many Islands of the Bahamas are really a mini-Caribbean where there are many choices. Some islands are larger than most in the Caribbean; other are tiny cays (pronounced "keys") poking their sandy heads above water. Consider some fascinating facts about the 700 islands of the Bahamian archipelago. There are many small hotels and resorts on the Out Islands such as Peace and Plenty on Exuma or Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros.

Exuma, located south of Nassau, the Exuma chain of islands stretch across the Tropic of Cancer about 300 miles off the coast of south Florida. With over 365 islands in the Exuma chain, there is a new one to explore every day of the year! Each island or cay has its own unique character. Some are quite small with secluded, pristine sand and untouched tropical vegetation. Others are quite rocky and rise up to spectacular cliffs or have lush, rolling green hills. The diverse landscapes are awe inspiring and promise to intrigue and excite even the most seasoned of world travelers. Great Exuma is the largest island in the Exuma chain (measures 85 square miles or 120 square kilometers) and it is connected to its neighbor, Little Exuma, by a small bridge. Great Exuma, with a population of approximately 5000, is a tropical paradise of unparalleled breathtaking ocean views, unforgettable beaches and secluded coves, picturesque azure waters and softly undulating hills. Thanks to the Gulf stream, the idyllic climate of the Exumas makes it an ideal vacation destination year round. A steady, gentle breeze from the Atlantic Ocean, tempers the heat of the summer sun. Winter on Exuma is perfect with an average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius). The beautiful aquamarine waters are warm and inviting year round for swimmers, snorkellers, diving enthusiasts and fisherman alike. When the rest of the northern hemisphere is suffering under a blanket of cold weather, the Exumas remain magnificently tropical!
