What Makes The Bahamas Unique

The Bahamas is comprised of 700 islands sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean starting just 50 miles off the coast of Florida. The archipelago is an ecological oasis featuring 2,000 breathtaking islands and cays and boasts the clearest water on the planet—with a visibility of over 200 feet. You can see your toes as easily as you can the world’s third largest barrier reef.

We invite you to explore all of our islands. One step and you’ll realize our beauty extends far beyond our extraordinary natural wonders. It’s the smiles on the faces of the Bahamian people. The unique sounds of our rich culture. The warm hospitality of our heritage and our colorful history.

Located on the island of New Providence, which is just 21 miles long and seven miles wide, Nassau is the bustling capital city of The Bahamas. Off the northeast corner of New Providence lies aptly named Paradise Island, which protects Nassau’s harbor along a three-mile stretch. Linked by two bridges, the 685-acre Paradise Island has been developed with amenities, hotels, resorts, restaurants and shops.

Tracing its heritage back to the days of pirates, Nassau has a colorful history that has been beautifully preserved in its colonial cathedrals, fortresses and mansions. Even to a casual observer, the British influence is easy to see.

These beautiful islands lie at the very heart of The Bahamas and contain over 70% of the population. Visitors are welcomed with an authentic blend of culture, experience and sunshine.

With over 2,000 breathtaking islands and cays, and the clearest water on Earth, it’s no wonder visitors come from all around to sink their toes into miles of pure white, and in some places pink, sand. Many of our beaches have been voted “best in the world” by numerous publications, and it’s not uncommon to find a celebrity or two strolling along our shores. In short, the beaches you’ll find here are the very definition of paradise.

Dining

Take the opportunity to discover Bahamian cuisine while you’re here. It’s spicy and uniquely flavored, indicative of the diversity of our islands and our people. Fresh seafood is the staple of our diet. Fresh conch sprinkled with lime juice and spices is delicious. Other delicacies you’ll enjoy are land crabs and the Bahamian “rock lobster.” Beginning with local ingredients—tropical fruit, seafood and spices—our eateries run the gamut. Down-home restaurants will feature traditional Bahamian favorites, while more artisan options will combine international cuisine with island flavor.
